What music do you have breakfast to?

(To be honest, I don't think of particular music I want to listen to upon waking. I like morning silence actually. But Joe seems to always have something in mind, acutely, when he rolls out of bed. This morning is Art Ensemble of Chicago and yesterday - King Tubby).

  1. King Tubby sounds nice. I listen to too much NPR in the morning (and all day), but I'm trying to gradually replace it with music, so maybe I'll start with the morning. I often turn off the radio while I'm eating breakfast so I can read. Being a total flake, I could see myself listening to Steve Roach or other drone-y ambient stuff in the morning. There's this show on the local independent radio station (WXPN- sort of like WYCE for the GR folks, only better) on Sunday mornings called Sleepy Hollow that can be really good morning music. It tends towards the mellow from, say, Hope Sandoval and the Warm Inventions to Air to Insert-name-of-the-latest-Greg-Brown-wannabe-here.

  2. This morning we listened to a loser (Feist) and found her music quite good.

  3. Wish I could listen to music in upon waking, but this morning all I heard was "shit, it's 7:15."

I have been enjoying the new PJ Harvey quite a bit. I think it would be good at anytime of the day (except maybe the middle of the night - too scary).

  4. I have enjoyed Joanna Newsom, another loser, in the morning. I think I like anything I normally like, minus the most depressing stuff, because I try to at least start out in a good mood.

Car Talk and You Bet Your Garden, two of the NPR programs (of many many) that Bruce enjoys in the morning, are programs I would gladly replace with pretty much any music. I usually leave the room and do just that.

  5. I used to wake up every morning and immediately put on "It's not unusual" by Tom Jones. My theory was that every day that started with this song would be a fantastic day. I did this for about 2 months. It worked for the first month (what a month!) but I got annoyed with the song and, thusly, I gradually got madder and madder over the second month to the point of finding myself flipping through a rifle magazine.

    Perscription:
1 listen of Tom Jones/day... AM.
Recommended for no longer than one month.

  6. @Dwight - I totally remember that. I think I slept over one night, and in the morning, I thought, "what the???" because you didn't just play it, you played it loud. Also, I may have had a hangover.

  7. I had a habit for quite a while of listening to Beck's "Soul Sucking Jerk" every morning before going to a job I really didn't like (logging video of various Amway operations, especially the manufacturing of their vitamins and herbal supplements). Then I'd sing it to myself while biking to work and it would build up my armor against the day.

  8. wait, Dwight's not serious. Anyone seen the classic Canadian film Highway 61 in which the song plays. I'm picturing Dwight running around a huge house with that loaded gun trying to kill chickens....

  9. Joe, I know Highway 61 and the scene to which you refer quite well. Fun stuff. I think my favorite part is the devil's lucky run at the church bingo game. Or the part where they cross into the US...Border Guard: "Why would I let YOU into my living room?" Or something like that.

I agree with Sarah about avoiding depressing stuff in the morning. A lot of times I feel like something with a little spiritual bent to it, too...The Staple Singers and Curtis Mayfield are both quite fitting.
