While we wait for Joe...

All time favorite solos, guitar or otherwise?

  1. This probably lame, but I love Robbie Robertson's solo on Tell Me Momma on Dylan's Live at Royal Albert Hall concert from '66. It is quick and has a nice mix of octaves and even styles.

I also am totally down with Prince's solo at the end of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from a George Harrison tribute:

    Buckethead is pretty entertaining too:

  2. I no longer know the names of the members of Wilco other than Jeff Tweedy, but whoever the guitar player is's solo on Either Way on Sky Blue Sky. It's actually kind of Adult Contemporary, but I really love it.

Whenever I think of guitar solos I almost always picture a former roommate (nobody in the Death Match) ripping it up while looking straight at me for approval. I think guitar solos are an odd thing: they can make you look like the coolest person in the world, but they are more likely to make you look a little foolish.

  3. that one Neil Young song ("Down by the River" I think) where he just plays one note for about 2 minutes. Buts then he blows it by throwing in some other notes.

  4. Not the hugest solo loving guy, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse did come to mind...I also really like Jimi Hendrix's Woodstock rendition of the "The Star Spangled Banner"...I find it very moving and of its time. Seriously.

At least Bruce will also be familiar with alternative CCM rockers The 77s...Mike Roe does some good solos on their live album "88"...Their version of "Baby, Please Don't Go" has an especially fun one. I listened to that shit a lot in my formative years.

  5. Weird - I had never even heard of the Hendrix version of Star Spangled Banner, but I just read a Sherman Alexie short story titled: "Because My Father Always Said He was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at Woodstock" (about the only thing I don't like about Alexie is that most of his titles are absurdly long.) It was good - you should check it out.

  6. Thanks for the heads-up, Anne. I've never read any Alexie, but I've heard some interviews with him and thought he sounded like an interesting character.
