Here we go

Here are the assignments for the first two divisions of round 1. Unfortunately, there are 17 of us, so someone is going to have to sit out each time. I volunteer to sit out on this round.

I've tried to make sure that no one has two of their picks going head to head, and I tried to make sure that no one got assigned their own album.

Do you all want me to keep score, or is that so 2010?

Finally, would it be too much to ask to try and make your picks by Saturday?

Happy listening...

  2. When I picture each of you listening to music, I have the same mental image for all: sitting in a hipster apartment in a hipster neighborhood (e.g. Wicker Park) sipping herbal tea, surrounded by books and copies of The New Yorker, and the Economist. And while that works well for albums by artists such as Cat Power, it really is the wrong way to listen to the most recent Chemical Brothers album. So I implore you, Brad, listen to Further while doing something awesome. Like riding around at night in a limo with a bunch of cocaine and champagne and hookers.

  3. Jeff, the Economist is so 2010

  4. DEATH MATCH - BRING IT BITCHES!

  5. Some crazy match-ups already. Especially for Joe, Joel, and Karl I'd say. May the rulingest bands win.

  6. Think of your pick this way, Jeff: Which album would make a better soundtrack for a movie about football?

  7. For us newbies, do we have a CD stash available? We're not going to make the deadline going the library route, and it's going to take me at least a week of shoveling (after I take out a cut for booze) to earn enough cash to buy my albums.

  8. @Karl - that is definitely going to be a factor. I love that show.

@arnoyser - try Grooveshark.com. they have most things available to listen for free. the track orders are often messed up, so you have to use amazon or something to find the correct order.

  9. Joel, I too have advice for you: pick the album that totally rocks over the one that totally sucks.

Karl, when grooveshark doesn't work, is there a way to share files that isn't exactly umm legal, but is umm safe from, say, prosecution?

  10. i used google docs from gmail to send the 10 mp3's that make up the ferraby lionheart album to eric smith...it was a little labor intensive on the upload, but it did work, right, eric?

  11. It worked great, Andy, thanks. I had to download the songs individually, but they all came together as a single album once in my iTunes player...Thanks again, as I was not able to find him on grooveshark.com. GS did have the Weakerthans album, however...I'm listening to it now, but my thoughts are not to be revealed yet...

  12. Seriously, is it too late to change my picks?

  13. Anybody want to send me some Jakalope? It's not on Grooveshark and I can't even find it via the usual illegal methods like Pirate Bay.

  14. Okay, maybe some of you have thought of this, but it just occurred to me:

For the Jakalope album I couldn't find it in any of the usual places, but I was able to find it on youtube. Somebody uploaded all of the tracks with just a still of the album cover and put them in a playlist. The only bummer is that you have to wait for them to load if your internet connection is slowish. At home I took care of this by opening a tab for each song, starting the loading, then doing something else for 15 minutes.

  15. I don't own a copy of this Jackalope album myself, should it therefore be DQ'd since the person who nominated it is unable to provide a copy for the judge? Since this is my first time doing this I don't know what precedent has been set in this regard.

  16. Bruce,

I hadn't read your comment when I put my previous comment up. I had just read Andrew's comment and I assumed things were at an impasse. It looks like you figured it out though. Thanks.

  17. ATTENTION EVERYONE:

I don't know if it makes a big difference, but I've changed my list to all Iron and Wine and Lady Sovereign albums.

So, I guess if you've got one of my picks in the first round, just substitute it out with one of those, and make the call.

  18. Joel,

Quit doubting your list. Have some faith in Gaga, man.

  19. I can't wait to become enemies with all of you.

  20. my vote:
the arcade fire - the suburbs

though nina's breath gasps and jim's bass drum did make this decision tricky.

  21. Full post full post full post, i vote for full post, Brooke.

That way we can all argue about it and alienate our friends in a proper forum dedicated to just that one decision.

  22. My vote - The Walkmen - You & Me (over Against Me! - New Wave) Since we're supposed the diss the losing pick - gotta say that I liked the instrumentals a lot (kind of Pixies-esque) but the the main vocalist's voice annoyed me. Hmmm, what else - lyrics could be a little repetitive - sorry.

On another note, I don't know why everyone is so concerned about hearing Jakalope. I mean, why bother listening to a loser? (let the trash talk commence...)

  23. LCD Soundsystem "(S)ound of (S)ilver" vs. Kings of Leon "Only by the Night"

LCD Soundsystem has roots in New Jersey, but this misfortune is overcome by its label, DFA, which comes from "Death from Above." Kings of Leon come from Tennessee, which gave us Bob Corker, Lamar Alexander, and Shannon Doherty...but it also gave us Morgan Freeman and Justin Timberlake. Plus their album title is poor plagiarism of "By the things that light the night."

I suppose I should also discuss the music.

First up was LCD Soundsystem. The album started slowly (not necessarily a bad thing) as I wondered if it was solely instrumental. Track 2 was neither good nor bad, but it sent me to wikipedia to see if the band descended from Public Image Limited or White Stripes. Track 3...that was more like it...I could get into this...but I won't be singing along to "North American Scum."

LCD Soundsystem reminded me of several other bands--Human League, Cake, Joy Division. I liked it, but I couldn't help but think that it came from the 90s.

There's not much I can say about Kings of Leon. They didn't make me think of feel anything, didn't remind me of anyone, and I had no urge to dance, sing along, or repeat any tracks. The music was earnest...it wasn't bad...but I don't think I'll keep it in my brand new Grooveshark playlist. The most damning thing about "Only by the things that buy the night" was its salesmanship for LCD Soundsystem. I skipped back to "Sounds of Silver" when it was done, and I immediately said, "Hey, I like this!" Brad and Vic can vouch for that (and Vic gets credit for the Joy Division comparison); they had stopped by in the middle of Kings of Leon, and I believe they now own a legit copy of LCD Soundsystem.

    LCD Soundsystem moves on.
