Choices, choices, choices

Here are your new picks. You’ll notice the last person to submit their choice always gets left off the new list, so no Jeff this round (Joe made it just under the wire—surprise, surprise). Unfortunately, this means Eric Arnoys has to wait until Jeff makes his decision until he knows exactly who he is deciding between, but he can at least get a start by listening to Deerhunter. What else? Notice that Dwight picked Hercules and now his own album goes up against them. Interesting. Maybe we could do this in under two weeks this time?

Oh, and since we're now into the phase where winners are going against winners, I encourage you all to leave comments rooting for albums you want to see continue on or bashing albums that you think have no right to have made it thus far.

  1. Here I thought the question mark meant I got to insert my own wildcard. If I could find a Beach Boys/BNL/Weakerthans/Gorillaz mashup, you can bet that'd be moving on already.

  2. Aw crap. I will post my review this afternoon.

  4. Yes, I just saw that. You are the first Dwight cause you can't pick your own Yeah Yeahs. Yeah?

  5. I'm glad you gave us two weeks...I should have finished my first run through on "Have One On Me" by then...isn't it like 14 hours long?

  6. Hey no one told me of a deadline last time did they? What?! I get Steve, Andrew and my sister vs. the Baird brothers? This blows!

  7. oh yeah...and it's named after my niece.

  8. Sucks to be Joe. Either way, you'll be hated. Also, thanks for advising, Andrew.

  9. Joe - no pressure - I won't be offended if you pick Feist. Can't promise that Beatrice will forgive you though...

Andru - this is officially how I'm going to spell your name from now on, since I've determined you're just misspelling mine to piss me off.

  10. Anne, I tried really hard to spell your name right this time. I think if you look more closely, you'll realize I got it right.

  11. Oh, and Anne, you can spell my name however you want. And Joe, you can choose whatever album you want--no pressure from me.

  12. Can someone please tell me what I am supposed to like about TV on the Radio...Thanks...

  13. you are supposed to like its awesomeness. you're welcome.

  14. Dude... It's like you can't see it, but it's a medium that's all about being able to be seen, so then is it really itself at all?

  15. @ anne: keep going...

@ bruce: you know they really do put tv on the radio...at least nbc does...everything is itself...what if hello kitty was goodbye kitty...would she exist?

  16. Andy W.,

One thing you can like about TV on the Radio is that the lead singer is a member of the Green Party, that's something unusual from a rock star.

  17. Where can I find this Johnny Flynn record to listen to?

  18. Steve, I can burn you a copy if you like.

  19. Dear Science,

We used to have a huge console radio that included "TV band," which was just some frequencies below 88mhz. I've definitely had analog radios that were a little out of adjustment that got a TV station or two also.

    Love,

    - Bruce

  20. I knew I could count on you, @Bruce...

  21. Andy W.,

Can you send me Lionheart Ferraby?

    Thank you

  22. Seriously, listen to Dear Science at least 3 full times. I didn't really like it the first time through - it has to grow on you.

  23. I second Anne. "Family Tree" comes to mind, but really, I celebrate the entire album.

  24. Don't forget to take into account how awesome the album is. That may also help you make your decision.

  25. Here's an argument against Girls - Album. Listen to their track "Ghostmouth" and then listen to The Beautiful South's song "Bell-bottomed Tear", which was written about 15 years before. Also, if I want to listen to Elvis Costello, I just go ahead and listen to Elvis Costello.

  26. burundi brad-

did you get the ferraby lionheart album yet...i sent it to you...let me know or email me @ andrew_wilson@earthlink.net...hope it works out...my fault for picking such an obscure album

    Hey Zwartitude-

ghostmouth is the exact same chord progression as a million songs...including hellhole ratrace on the same album...i'm christopher owens can't get enough of the beautiful south...what i like about girls, apart from their soft skin and pretty smelling hair, is the freaked out, effed up emotional tone of the songs...elvis costello may sound the same, but he doesn't feel the same...this music is all about feeling...did you see any of the nsfw videos that pitchfork posted...i didn't know they made microphones that look like d**ks...anyhoo, who cares...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Andy, it's not just the chord progression. The melody is literally note for note. Glad to read your defense though. I actually listened to them a little last night and liked the album a little more. Not saying I'd vote for it, but still...

Oh, and just a reminder to everyone (and especially you newbies) that everything I say on this blog you should tone down about 95% (especially about the Beachboys and Karl's muscial taste).

  28. And anything about The Clash, Joni Mitchell, or yours truly, right? Hor-hee-hor-hee-hor. Chortle.

    ReplyDelete
  29. See Sarah, you get me. Except I would like to say without hyperbole that The Clash's album London Calling is the greatest album of all time and y'all need to recognize.

Hey, are there other albums we're all voting on that any of you feel strongly about? Someone want to tell me why either Sigur Ros or Jay Dee should win? Honestly, I'm feeling luke-warm on both right now--your impassioned arguments could sway me...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think Jay Dee should win so that I can listen to it in a future round.

  31. "And then there's Donuts. The last album Dilla released during his lifetime is the apotheosis of his final phase as a beatmaker, where his deceptively simple, minimally altered loops jump in unanticipated places, are doubled back, get recut into hidden messages, and fold into themselves in a way that denotes careful precision cleverly disguised as random spontaneity. In toying with and commenting on the basis of familiar hip-hop techniques to throw rhythmic curveballs, Donuts does what James Yancey was always untouchable at: upending the idea of sampling and computer-assembled beats as mere appropriation, leaving his fingerprints all over the surface and coming through with tracks that sound like they were entirely built with human hands."

That's from pitchfork.com, which I sometimes think is crazy and/ or pretentious, but this piece I think is an especially well-written little summary of why Donuts is real good.

For the entire excellent article, you can go to:

    http://pitchfork.com/features/articles/7830-got-til-its-gone-the-legacy-of-j-dilla/

Also, I feel luke-warm about a lot of stuff that has made it into the MDM so far...My wife has suggested that perhaps we change the title to "Indie Crap Match 2011"???

    ReplyDelete
  32. There's nothing indie about Lady Gaga. Though "crap match" would still work for that one...

    ReplyDelete
  33. Dude, have you guys listened to "The Fame Monster"?

    It's fun/ridiculous/awesome crap.

    There's a song called "Alejandro."
